TERM PAPER GUIDELINES
Your term paper will be on Carmen Laforet’s Nada. Copies of the novel are available in the bookstore. It will not be necessary for you to carry out extensive research as perhaps you have done for other term papers. The purpose of this exercise is to have everyone carefully read the novel and write an essay in which s/he examines some aspect of that reading experience. In other words, what we’re looking for here is a careful reading and then serious thought related to some aspect of the novel. Organize and summarize your ideas in writing and when appropriate support them with other sources.
Since the paper should be only about six pages long, the topic needs to be a narrow one. Perhaps a reader will find the relationship between the Spanish Civil War and the dysfunctionality of Andrea’s family interesting and choose to write about that. Someone familiar with the Bildungsroman may want to write about Nada as an example of that subgenre. Someone with an understanding of “individuation” may want to look at Andrea’s maturation as an evolution of the self from adolescence to adulthood. This paper should above all be an expression of what readers learn from their experience of the novel. I hope that everyone, through the reading process, will find a subject of interest.
Papers should be typed. Please allow time for computer problems, etc.
Anyone planning to submit this essay as a Senior Paper needs to indicate this on the title page of the paper.
April 15 is the last day that papers will be accepted for full credit.
Incompletes will be given only in the case of hardship (death in the family, ill health). Anyone wishing to request an incomplete must do so before the last week of class.
Please see me during my office hours if you have problems understanding the assignment or the novel or have difficulty choosing a topic. Nada has been a favorite among my students, and I hope you as well will enjoy it.
Note: Plagiarism is considered a serious offense at the University of Arkansas. Papers that contain copied portions of any work by a writer other than yourself will receive no credit (a loss of 20% of the final grade) and will be reported to the proper University authority. If you have any questions about what is acceptable with regard to the quoting or paraphrasing of sources, please see me.
