Western culture has developed many strange and interesting forms and genres of entertainment. In recent years the most popular medium in which to present entertainment has become the motion picture. This medium has allowed for many interesting sub-genres to develop. I am going to look at a sub-genre of a sub-genre. In the genre of horror there is the sub-genre of the slasher film. The sub-genre of the sub-genre that this website focuses on is the zombie movie. I will be looking specifically at the two movies based off the popular “Resident Evil” video game.
These movies have a very interesting character, Alice, played by Milla Jovovich. This character is a very strong female. She goes through an interesting transformation throughout the two movies. This character brings many interesting questions that can be analyzed within the field of gender studies. I will use Alice as an example to show some of the ways women are viewed, the way women are changing that role, and the assumptions we have as a society for certain roles, gender wise.
To properly analyze the character of Alice and her role in the “Resident Evil” movies I will use three main literature sources. I will use “Men, Women, and Chainsaws, Gender in the Modern Horror Film”, by Carol Clover, to analyze the aspect of the horror film, specifically the idea of the “final girl.” I will also use “Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema”, by Laura Mulvey, to analyze the typical role of women in film. Finally, I will use “The Male Body”, by Susan Bordo, to analyze the certain expectations of gender our culture places on certain roles. These movies give us insight into some of the gender distinctions in our culture, and I would argue that it pushes the limits of some of those. |
