“Resident Evil” and its sequel “Resident Evil: Apocalypse” are two movies that follow a singular story line surrounding the character Alice. Alice is an employee of the world’s largest manufacturing entity. She is a security agent at a top secret facility known as “The Hive”.
The corporation Alice works for is the Umbrella Corporation. It is the world’s largest supplier of many things, but, unknown to the public, it makes most of its profits from genetic, viral, weaponry, and military technology sales. This is why “The Hive” exists. It is to keep secret all of the terrible experiments that are going on within this corporation.
The story starts with the release of one of Umbrella’s latest creations, the t-virus. This virus causes mutation and regeneration on a massive scale. The computer that runs “The Hive” senses the virus and quickly kills everyone inside, then seals the building. Alice is knocked out and does not remember who she is or what was going on in “The Hive”.
A team of Umbrella super-agents come to “The Hive” and take Alice down to the building. They go and reboot the computer, “The Red Queen”. She, the computer, warns them not to do this and kills some of the squad. This reboot releases the thing the computer was trying to keep in. This is when “Resident Evil” enters the horror genre.
The dead employees are regenerated by the t-virus. They become zombies. They are driven by only on instinct, the need to feed. Alice is starting to get her memory back. She realizes that these things cannot get to the outside, and that the team must get to the surface. Alice takes control and realizes she has extraordinary talent and powers. Alice, Matt, and Rain, another strong female character played by Michelle Rodriguez, are the only ones who get to the surface. Rain dies, Matt becomes infected and Alice is grabbed by men in containment suits.
Alice wakes up in a clean room with multiple IVs in her head, arms, etc… This shows a level of experimentation has been done on her. She breaks out into Raccoon City to find that the incident has spread and took over this entire town. The movie ends with her cocking a shotgun and staring into the empty streets.
In the sequel Alice is more of an action character. She is the only one who truly realizes the threat. She can see who is infected. She kills things in the most amazing way. She even fights with a monster, “Nemesis”, that is insanely huge and packing an insane amount of fire power.
It is let known that Alice has been infected with the t-virus, but it has been modified to generate within her at a controlled rate. This makes her super-human. She is amazingly strong. She is agile. She is the “action-hero” of this movie. It is more of an action movie than a horror movie because the character of Alice has changed to a role that is far more active. Alice drives the plot in the sequel and ultimately kills all the bad guys, becoming even stronger in the end. |
