Ragtime Jazz

Ragtime was a syncopated type of jazz that was exciting and enabled people to dance.  It is usually played on the piano.  It gained popularity in the 1890s and early 1900s and became America’s favorite type of music for more than 20 years.  Although the jazz originated in the Midwest, it became especially popular in New Orleans.

Notable Musician:

Scott Joplin was a ragtime pianist.  He composed such great rags as Maple Leaf Rag and the Entertainer.  Although he was and is still very famous, he made no records and few piano rolls. Joplin lived in St. Louis and his house is open to visitors.
