Swing Dancing

The fast exciting tempos of swing jazz make it easy to dance to.  Because the music is so dance-oriented, swing dancing became a big hit and is still practiced today in many ballrooms across the country.

Swing Dancing began in the 1920s with African Americans who created the Charleston and the Lindy Hop, two styles of swing dancing.  Swing dancing melds ballroom, tap, and jazz dancing.  The Savoy Ballroom in New York is one of the most famous ballrooms for swing dancing because of the nightly dancing that went on in the late 1920s and early 1930s.

In the mid 1930s, the Jitterbug, a faster dance, was created.  By the 1940s, people all over the United States had created many different types of swing dancing, including Imperial Swing and the Carolina Shag.
