<Fragmentation of Education Policymaking>

*States have the biggest right and responsibility for education. It means that around 45% of governance and founding come from states. In addition, it is important to remenber that the U.S. has NO national curriculum like Japan, so each state has different curriculums.

 

<Compulsory Education>

Age 6-16 years old, for 10 years.

 

<Structure of the U.S. System>

*Public schools are divided into elementary and secondary schools and there are 3 common patterns how students spend time at schools.

  1. Elementary school (K-5), Midlle school (6-8), High school (9-12)
  2. Elementary school (K-6), Midlle school (7-9), High school (9-12)
  3. Elementary school (K-8), Midlle school (9-12), High school (9-12)

(The current tend is toward the first pattern, because of believes of different levels of adolescence and all U.S. students have access to free public schools.)

*School day is 6.5 hours and school year is 180 days.

 

<School Schedule>

*2 semester system, Fall and Spring semesters

*School starts in Fall
