Teacher strategies and evaluation
Strategies
An appropriate strategy to follow anytime you use technology is to adhere to the six P's.
1. Pretest students
2. Preview materials
3. Prepare materials
4. Prepare environment
5. Prepare learners
6. Provide experience and interaction
Here are some ways in which you can use these six P's...
1. Pretest students: First, you need to determine what your students already know about specific elements related to the topic. For example:
-List some modern artists.
-Name some modern French artists.
-Name some of the styles or schools of art developped in the twentieth century.
or you could show them some slides of works of art, asking your students if they recognize any of them and/or can name the works in question and/or the artists who did them.
2. Preview materials: Next, you need to preview the materials that you will be using. For example, if you have specific websites for the students to work with, you will want to look these over and make sure that they will be beneficial to the students and their goals. Also, check on the appropriateness of the level of the sites as they relate to your students. Basically, just make sure that everything will work.
3. Prepare materials: You then need to prepare the appropriate materials. For example, advance organizer questions, statements, true or false ideas or visuals that you would go over in class with the students prior to their working with the web module.
4. Prepare environment: To ensure that everything will run smoothly the day that you begin to work with the website and corresponding activities, make sure that you have your questions and/or written materials printed out, that you have the appropriate equipment for in-class presentation, or that you have access to the computer lab to go over the module with the students.
5. Prepare learners: Before your students begin to work with the module, make sure that you've prepared them for the work to come. Give them an overview of the module, go over the advance organizers, and let them know what is expected of them within each segment of the module. To do these things, refer to the objectives outlined in this teacher component, as well as the pre- and post-viewing questions sections.
6. Provide experience and interaction: In order for this program and technology in general to be effective and personable, work closely with your students while using these materials. Give them constant support and feedback, and make sure that you ALWAYS bring the information back into the classroom and interact in relation to it.
Evaluation
For the testing of content, you could use multiple choice, true/false, fill in the blank, completions, essay, matching, question/response, ordering of ideas, etc. Hands-on activities, group and/or individual research presentations, and field trips are also good ways in which to test your students on the content of the website. Grading as subjectively as possible is obviously recommended, and you should be able to devise, or should have already devised, a system for doing so.
