A. Bautizo
Todos los jóvenes con que hablé se han bautizado. (Every one of the young people I talked to has been baptized in some faith.) In the Catholic faith, babies are baptized in the form of sprinkling. At the time of baptism, they are given their names. Many babies are named for members of the family, or they are given the name of a particular saint that the family wants to honor. In the Catholic faith, saints have a certain day of the year on which they are honored. The family might decide to name the baby for the saint who is being honored on the day the baby is born, or they might name the baby for a saint who is honored on another day. Whether or not the baby is given the name of a saint, there is an interesting custom that is followed in naming most babies born to a Hispanic family. The baby is given his first and second names (nombres de pila), the father´s last name (apellido), and finally the mother´s maiden name. Just as in our country, the baby´s legal last name is the name of the father, but the mother´s maiden name is last when the name is written or spoken. For example, if Marisol Elena Pérez married Donato Diego Ramírez, and they had a son whom they named José Ricardo, his full name would be José Ricardo Ramírez Pérez.
Actividad: Look at the following names of young people and identify which is the father´s name and which is the mother´s name.

1. LAS FECHAS
1) Para formar una fecha en español, tienes que escribir la palabra el, el número del día, la palabra de, y el nombre del mes. (to form a date in Spanish, write the word el, the number of the day of the month, and then the name of the month.) ¡Recuerda ! Cuando es el primer día del mes, debes decir el primero. (Don’t forget! The first is not el uno, but el primero.)
Modelo: September 9: el 9 de septiembre; December 1: el primero de diciembre
2) Ahora, escribe las fechas de los cumpleaños de estas personas.
Si no sabes la fecha, pregúntasela. (If you don’t know the date, ask them for it!!)
Modelo: tu maestro de matemáticas: Su cumpleaños es el 2 de julio.

Mira esta lista de unos de los santos y los días de su celebración. Entonces, sigue las instrucciones y el modelo. El santo es una expresión que significaba the saint or the day of the saint´s celebration.

Babies
of faiths other than catholic are baptized at different times. Most Baptists
are given their baptism of immersion at the time that they accept Christ as
their personal Savior. Usually, this will be at a later age, at a time when
the young person can make the decision for him/herself. Some Evangelicals choose
to be baptized and others do not wish to be baptized; it is a matter of personal
choice. People who practice indigenous religions have various rituals which
they go through. It might be a ritual cleansing, a retreat, or a personal pilgrimage,
according to the beliefs of the particular religion.
A number of people
believe in astrology; that is, that the stars determine the course of their
lives. Many will go to a palm reader or a Tarot card reader to ask for advice
or to have their futures revealed.
