La Importancia de los santos en la vida diaria:
Unlike most protestants, the catholics in México revere and depend on the saints for guidance and protection. In many homes you will find paintings or drawings representing various saints on whom they depend for blessing and protection of their homes. Saint Sebastian, for example, is the patron saint of transportation. Often, one will see a representation of him hanging from the rearview mirror of a taxi or bus. Images of the Virgen de Guadalupe can be seen almost everywhere--on the street, in the home, and in businessesasking for her blessing and protection. Many people believe that she is more important even than Christ Himself. She is revered so much because she was the first part of Roman Catholic theology with whom the Indians of México could identify, because she was brown like them.
Go to www.google.com and type in "La Virgen de Guadalupe y Juan Diego." That will give you an excellent version of the story in Spanish, if you´re feeling brave. ¡Puedes hacerlo! (You can do it!) At least, try it to see how much you understand. Then you can go to "The Vírgen of Guadalupe and Juan Diego," get the English version, and check your understanding.
