Antes de Cristóbal Colon, había* muchos grupos de indios que vivían* en el parte del mundo* que ahora se llama México. Aunque* había muchos grupos, como los Olmecas, Zapatecas, Mayas, y Mixtecas, vamos a estudiar el grupo más poderoso* y famoso. Lee el párrafo de un guerrero Azteca cuando te dice algo de su vida.
"Me llamo Nezahualcoyotl. Soy guerrero* Azteca. Vivo en Tenochtitlán en el valle de Texcoco, y mi idioma* es Nahuatl. Somos los indios más poderosos del mundo. Nuestro* dios* más importante se llama Quetzalcoatl. También, hay otros dioses: Tláloc, el dios de la lluvia*; Huitzilopochtli, el dios de la guerra; Tonantzin, la diosa de la tierra, y muchos más. Honramos a nuestros dioses con danzas, ofrecimientos de la sangre*, comida, y sacrificios. Hacemos guerra contra otros indios, y los cautivos sirven para sacrificios a nuestros dioses. En los templos, los sacerdotes* sacrifican a los cautivos para honrar a nuestros dioses. Es un gran honor morir* en batalla o como sacrificio."

Los Aztecas believed that the cycle of their lives and civilization lasted for 52 years, and that every 52 years, the cycle of life started over. A ceremonial dance that symbolized this belief is still performed today by five men in costume with a flute and a small drum. They climb to the top of a tall pole with a small platform on top. Four of them attach themselves at the waist with a rope which is wound around the platform, and the fifth one stands on the platform and plays music as they "fly" upside down around the pole and descend to the ground. They make 13 revolutions around the pole. If you multiply 13 times the 4 men, you will get the sum of 52–the number of years in the life cycle. Look at these pictures of the Indians of today performing this ancient ritual dance of the Aztecs. The ceremonial dance is called La Danza de los Voladores.
