Most students at this time have had little or no exposure to Creole cultures. They have differing levels of understanding of the word itself and this fosters misconceptions about what indeed is Creole. The Creole people have been misunderstood, misrepresented and misinterpreted for centuries. Now all that American students may hear or see of Creole culture is based on myths and stereotypes, moreover the Hollywood image of Creoles. The reading provided on the website coupled with the discovery questions and discussions in class will help lead students to examine what characterizes the Creole culture and its people.

The objectives of each student page are as follows:

Vocabulaire: Students will distinguish linguistic differences in creole words and expressions from around the world.

Pays: Using a map, students will accurately locate different Creole cultures around the world. They will also discover characteristics of each nation and their people.

Culture: Students will compare and contrast the traditional qualities of Creole music and cuisine through a multiple-choice activity.

Histoire: Students will, with few errors, practice verb formation using references from the history reading.

Controverses: Students will form personal opinions surrounding the debate over Creole education in Haiti.

Kissin' Cousins-Cajun: Students will discuss the difference between Cajun and Creole and why there is such confusion between the two.

Bizarre-Voodoo: Students will begin to unravel the myths about the Voodoo religion and why it is so important to Creole culture.
