As in the United States, sports seem to play a large role in the extracurricular activities. Students participate in a large variety of deportes. For example:

Students take classes of educacion física to learn the deportes.
There are school equipos, but no class periods set aside for team practice
so students practice after school or on the weekends. As in the United States,
team sports are not a requirement. In fact, students can't join un equipo
without an invitation from the entrenador (coach). The entrenadores
select students from the physical education classes and then invite those students
to join the team. The schools offer a lot of choice in sports. Teams play dentro
de la escuela (intramural) and entre escuelas (with other schools).
Participation on the team does not depend on grades.
Withteams come all the usual trappings. Yes, Mexican athletes do wear uniformes. And yes, these teams do participate in torneos where they can win trofeos.
