LABORATORY SAFETY RULES

  1. All materials and clothing other than laboratory manual and notebook are to be kept off the bench and immediate surroundings. NO FOOD OR DRINKS WILL BE ALLOWED AT ANY TIME! NO SMOKING!

  2. Laboratory coats are recommended. Do not wear short skirts, shorts and bare-midriff shirts in the laboratory. Remove all loose jewelry.

  3. Wear safety glasses at all times while working in the lab.

  4. Wash hands with bacteriocidal soap before and after experimentation.

  5. Do not wear scarves and neckties in the lab, as they may be ignited accidentally in the burner flame.

  6. Long beards and hair must be secured away from burner flames and chemicals.

  7. Never leave Bunsen burners unattended when lighted.

  8. Never heat solutions to dryness unless this is done in an evaporating dish on a hotplate or over a boiling water bath.

  9. Never heat a "closed system" such as a stoppered flask.

  10. Never fully inhale the vapors of a substance. Waft a tiny amount of vapor toward your nose if asked to do so as part of the lab.

  11. Never add water to concentrated reagent when diluting the reagent. Always add the reagent to the water. If the water is added to a concentrated reagent, local heating and density effects may cause the reagent to be splashed back.

  12. Discard all equipment and chemicals as instructed by your teacher.

  13. If potential human pathogenic organisms are used in the lab, aseptic techniques are mandatory to prevent infection. KEEP HANDS AND OTHER OBJECTS AWAY FROM YOUR MOUTH.

  14. Report all accidents, burns or broken glass to your instructor.

  15. Microscopes should be left with low power lens down and clean of oil. If you find a scope in bad condition inform your instructor.

  16. Be a good lab citizen. If you open it, close it; if you spill it, clean it up.
