Graduate Council Agenda

for Thursday, June 16th, 2011
at 2:00 p.m.
Upchurch Conference Room

  1. Minutes for the May 19th, 2011, Graduate Council meeting will stand approved if no corrections are received.  (Please review the minutes on the Graduate School web page before the meeting:  http://www.uark.edu/grad).
  2. Announcements
  3. Reports from the Academic Appeals Subcommittee, the Teaching Assistant Effectiveness Advisory Committee, and the Subcommittee on the Annual Graduate Student Academic Review.
  4. Old Business:  None
  5. New Business:  Request for exemption from policy:  The Department of Electrical Engineering, College of Engineering, requests an exemption from the policy restricting transfer credit to six hours, and also requests an exemption from the policy restricting transfer credit from institutions outside of the U.S.   The Department proposes that up to nine hours of graduate-level credit be subject to transfer from programs with which the University of Arkansas has a “1+1” M.S.E.E. exchange program. Since these institutions may be foreign, there is also potentially the need to transfer international credit into the student’s degree program (Attachment A).
  6. New Business, Request for Program Changes, Department of Agricultural and Extension Education, Bumpers College:
    1. Changes in required course work for the M.S. degree in Agricultural and Extension Education (AEEDMS), as described in Section V of Attachment B.
    2. Proposal to offer by distance the existing M.S. degree in Agricultural and Extension Education (AEEDMS) (Attachment C, Attachment D).
  7. Discussion about continuous enrollment policy for post-candidacy doctoral students:  Current policy says “All doctoral students who have been admitted to candidacy must enroll in a minimum of one hour of graded graduate course work or dissertation credit every semester (fall, spring, summer) until they graduate.”  The Academic Appeals Committee of the Graduate Council determined that this wording explicitly eliminates course work taken for Audit or receiving a CR mark.  Should the policy be changed to allow those types of courses?
  8. Graduate faculty recommendations for graduate faculty:   A preliminary list is attached (Attachment E).  A complete list will be distributed at the meeting.
  9. Other Business
