- Minutes for the November 17, 2011, Graduate Council meeting stand approved, as no changes were suggested. (The minutes of the Graduate Council may be found at http://grad.uark.edu/dean/gradcouncil/minutes/index.html).
- Professor Andrew Dowdle accepted the nomination to serve on the University Course and Programs Committee.
- Ms. Sue Theiss announced that she will be leaving the University to take a position elsewhere. The Council expressed its appreciation to her for her years of service to the students, faculty and staff on our campus and wished her well in her new position.
- Reports from the Academic Appeals Committee and the Teaching Assistant Effectiveness Advisory Committee were sent earlier by e-mail (Attachment A). There were no questions about the reports.
- Professor B. McComas presented, for information only, a proposal to change the name of the M.Ed. degree in Elementary Education to Curriculum and Instruction; the alpha code will change from ELEDME to CIEDME (Attachment B and Attachment C).
- New Business:
- Professor B. Gartin presented a proposal to create a graduate certificate in Applied Behavior Analysis (Attachment D and Attachment E). Following discussion and an agreement to change catalog copy, the proposal was approved and will go next to the Faculty Senate, Board of Trustees (BOT) and Arkansas Department of Higher Education (ADHE).
- Professor C. Wissehr presented a proposal to create a graduate certificate in STEM Education for Early Childhood (K-4). (Attachment F and Attachment G). It should be noted that an incorrect proposed name was entered onto the 1622.20A form for the meeting agenda and an incorrect course number for this program was included in the course change report. These have been corrected on the attachments. Following discussion, the proposal was approved and will go next to the Faculty Senate, BOT and ADHE.
- The Council discussed this motion and will consider it again at the January meeting: While graduate faculty status is assigned by the Graduate Council, the Council approved a change in policy to allow incoming tenure-track faculty to be assigned an appropriate level of graduate faculty status by a slightly altered procedure. The department chair/head would be required to send an e-mail, with a copy of the faculty member’s CV, to the graduate faculty representative for that college, stating the level of graduate faculty status requested. The graduate faculty representative would forward this request, together with his/her recommendation, to the Graduate School. A list of such faculty will be presented, as an information item, to the Graduate Council at its monthly meeting.
- The Council approved the course change report from the University Course and Programs Committee, contained in Attachment H.
- The Council approved the graduate faculty recommendations listed in Attachment I.
There being no other business, the Council adjourned at 3:00 p.m.
