-
Professor Koski wished the Council members a very happy Valentine’s Day.
-
Minutes for the January 17th, 2013, Graduate Council meeting stand approved, as no changes were suggested. (The minutes of the Graduate Council may be found at
http://grad.uark.edu/dean/gradcouncil/minutes/index.php).
-
Professor Koski reported that the Graduate School hosted a very successful Graduate Education Week last week, with a reception for the Doctoral Fellows and a poster competition.
-
Committee Reports: Professor Koski reported that the:
-
Teaching Assistant Effectiveness Advisory Committee is now planning the TA Supervisor Appreciation Lunch and will be selecting the Outstanding TA Supervisor Award.
-
Academic Appeals Committee has not met since the last Council meeting.
-
There was no Old Business.
-
Professor A. O’Leary Kelly presented a proposal to change the name of the Managerial MBA degree to the Executive MBA degree. Since this is not an official ADHE-approved name, the approval is confined to the campus and is for the purposes of marketing the program. Following questions, the proposal was approved and will go next to the Faculty Senate (
Attachment A).
-
Council members reported from their constituencies about the possibility of further limiting the number of 3000- and 4000-level courses allowed for graduate credit. Council members agreed that the will of the graduate faculty is to leave limits to the discretion of the degree programs/departments, as long as they are consistent with current Graduate Council policy.
-
Professor Koski introduced the idea of requiring the GRE or a similar standardized exam for admission to the Graduate School. Currently, the Graduate School does not have such an admission requirement although many degree programs do require the GRE, GMAT, MAT, LSAT or a similar test. The Council members agreed to poll their constituencies on this topic.
-
Professor R. Brown presented two proposals from the Department of Electrical Engineering with regard to Graduate Council policies (
Attachment B).
Following discussion, Professor Koski agreed to draft a possible compromise between current policies and these suggestions, for the Council to review.
-
The course change reports contained in
Attachment C
and
Attachment D
were approved and will go next to the Faculty Senate.
-
The graduate faculty recommendations contained in
Attachment E
were approved.
There being no other business, the Council adjourned at 3:07 p.m.
