Graduate Faculty Classifications

The graduate faculty consists of those faculty members in area or departments in which graduate study is offered who have been approved by the Graduate Council in one of the following classifications:

NOTE: Group I and II status are available for department/programs to decide whether their incoming tenure-track faculty will be allowed immediately to chair doctoral committees.

CLASSIFICATION Group I, Group I-T*

AUTHORITY

  • Teaching of graduate-level classes or dual-listed 4000 level classes.
  • Serve on or chair master's committees (including M.F.A.degree).
  • Serve on or chair Ed.S. committees.
  • Serve on or chair doctoral committees.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Doctoral degree and evidence of proficiency.

CLASSIFICATION Group II, Group II-T

AUTHORITY

  • Teaching of graduate-level classes or dual-listed 4000 level classes.
  • Serve on or chair master's committees (including M.F.A. degree).
  • Serve on Ed.S. committees.
  • Serve on doctoral committees.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Doctoral or M.F.A. degree and evidence of proficiency.

CLASSIFICATION Group III, Group III-T

AUTHORITY

  • Teaching of graduate-level classes or dual-listed 4000 level classes.
  • Serve on or chair master's committees (including M.F.A. degree).

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master's degree and evidence of proficiency.

CLASSIFICATION Group IV, Group IV-T

AUTHORITY

  • Teaching of graduate-level classes or dual-listed 4000 level classes.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master's degree and evidence of proficiency.

Requests for approval of such classifications are initiated by departments and are subject to the approval of the appropriate deans.

* Graduate faculty with an adjunct position may not direct doctoral or MFA theses without approval from the Graduate Dean, on a student-by-student basis. Applications for temporary faculty status must specify the time period requested.
