ENGINEERING GRADUATE STUDENTS SHINE AT INTERNATIONAL MEETINGS
-- Posted by dboddie on Monday, December 15 2003

Graduate students from the Materials and Manufacturing Research Laboratories and Micro Electronics and Photonics Program at the University of Arkansas department of mechanical engineering had a strong showing in the recent American Society of Mechanical Engineers International Mechanical Engineering Congress and RD&D Expo, held this year in Washington, DC. Presentations by both Mohamed Al-Fandi on "Simulation and Design of an E. Coli-Based Rotary Micropump for Use In Microfluidic Systems: Integration of Micro-Nano-Bio," and Nikhil Joshi on "Geometric Error Assessment of A Nanodrill," were well received. A presentation by Daryl Spencer regarding a "Novel Method for Wafer-Scale Packaging of Opto-electronic Devices" was equally well received at the International Microelectronics and Packaging Society (IMAPS) 36th International Symposium on Microelectronics held in Boston, MA during the same week.

MAGAZINE RANKS U OF A NO. 4 FOR COMBINED MEAT AND POULTRY PROGRAMS: POULTRY PROGRAM RANKED NO. 1 IN NATION

The University of Arkansas has been ranked fourth among the 10 best meat and poultry-related programs in the nation by Meat and Poultry magazine. The magazine ranked the U of A No. 1 nationally in poultry processing education, research and extension. The order is a move up from the fifth place rank awarded the U of A for the last two years. The university has been in the top half of the top 10 in each of the three years the magazine has been ranking meat and poultry programs.

Meat and Poultry magazine, which is circulated throughout the United States and Canada, ranked the U of A fourth for the quality of its programs in poultry science and animal science. It also counted the contribution of the food science, biological and agricultural engineering, and agricultural economics and agribusiness departments for the quality of graduates entering the work force and problem-solving services to the industry.

UA Vice President for Agriculture Milo Shult said the national ranking reflects major advances in statewide division of agriculture animal science and poultry science programs since 1992, when the two departments were created by dividing the former department of animal and poultry science.

Keith Lusby was appointed animal science department head in 1995. Walter Bottje was appointed head of the poultry science department and director of the Center of Excellence for Poultry Science in 2003.

"Our animal agriculture programs have achieved national prominence in a short time, thanks to able leadership and a dedicated faculty," Shult said.
