First priority will be given to U.S. citizens and permanent residents. Recipients cannot be university employees.

Qualified students will be nominated by the chairs/heads of participating departments. Nominations for the 2008-2009 academic year must be received in the Graduate School by February 1, 2008.

It is anticipated that 10-15 Distinguished Doctoral Fellowships will be awarded for students beginning their studies in August, 2008. Fellowship awardees will receive a minimum of $30,000 annually, renewable for up to three years after the first year of the fellowship. These fellowships are structured as follows:

  • A $20,000 annual fellowship supplement, renewable for up to three years after the initial award year, for a maximum award of $80,000 over 4 years. The fellowship award is paid in increments of 1/12 each month.
  • A half-time 12-month graduate assistant position, provided by the department. The graduate assistant position has a minimum annual stipend of $10,000 per year. The graduate assistant stipend is paid monthly.
  • Payment of tuition for degree-related course work, provided the student is properly enrolled, maintains good standing and makes good progress towards completion of the degree.

All students who accept a Distinguished Doctoral Fellowship are expected to submit a proposal to the National Science Foundation, IF the student’s area of study is one for which NSF provides fellowships.

If a Distinguished Doctoral Fellow requires more than four years for degree completion, the host department may provide funding for further support.

Should a Distinguished Doctoral Fellow graduate, change degree programs, or leave the university, the fellowship will terminate.

PAUL KURODA FELLOWSHIP –
for Graduate and Exceptional Undergraduate Students

The Kuroda Fellowship is named in honor of Paul Kazuo Kuroda, distinguished professor emeritus of Chemistry at the University of Arkansas. The objective is to continue the efforts and work of Dr. Kuroda using the extensive body of work published by Dr. Kuroda, et al., regarding the age of the solar system and/or the origin of the elements found in the solar system. Students interested in applying for this grant will be provided a complete list of published papers for review before making a proposal for the work to be done.

This fellowship will be used for a grant to support an undergraduate or graduate student in Physics, Chemistry, or Engineering to continue the work of Dr. Kuroda. Students applying for this grant will submit a proposal for work to be done based on the review by the student of key publications written by Dr. Kuroda, et al. In accordance with the gift agreement, the students are to propose research in one of the following areas: 1) the age of the solar system using existing data and work completed by Kuroda, et al., or 2) the origin of the elements.

The proposal from the student should demonstrate an understanding of the subject, the theories of Dr. Kuroda, and propose work which leads to a restatement of the work for wider readership, clarification of supporting data, or expansion of the scientific thought that is the basis of the theories of Dr. Kuroda. Proposals will be reviewed by a committee comprised of the Vice Provost for Research/Dean of the Graduate School, the Chair of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, and Colonel William A. Myers of the Department of Chemical Engineering.

The purpose of the fund is to provide a permanent source of revenue for an annual grant to the selected student of $12,000 per year, paid monthly, to support the Kuroda Fellowship. In addition to the monthly stipend, the student’s tuition will be paid. No other university fees or charges can be paid from fellowship funds.

The fellowship will be awarded for doctoral students up to five years, and for master’s and undergraduate students up to two years. Continued funding past the first award year is based upon good standing and progress towards the degree.

Applicants for the fellowship must meet the following qualifications:

  • Be admitted to the University of Arkansas without condition.
  • Be admitted to a degree program.
  • Be approved by the Vice Provost for Research/Dean of the Graduate School.
  • Undergraduate students should have completed 60 hours of progress toward the degree.

Recipients of the fellowship must:

  • Maintain full-time enrollment status.
  • Maintain good academic standing throughout the degree program.

BENJAMIN FRANKLIN LEVER TUITION FELLOWSHIP

The Lever Tuition Fellowship is designed to increase diversity within degree programs by providing financial assistance to graduate students from underrepresented groups. This fellowship is not available to otherwise qualified graduate students who receive tuition payment from another source, such as a graduate assistant position or other tuition award. A limited number of fellowships are available each year.

Applicants for the fellowship must:

  • Be U.S. citizens.
  • Be admitted to the UA Graduate School without condition.
  • Be regularly admitted to a graduate degree program.
  • Be nominated by the graduate degree program.
  • Be approved by the Dean of the Graduate School.
  • Maintain full-time enrollment for each semester the fellowship is to be applied towards tuition payment. Full-time enrollment for graduate students is 9 hours each major semester (fall and spring). Enrollment during the summer semester is optional, but if the student does enroll, 6 hours is considered full-time.
  • Maintain good academic standing throughout the degree program (2.85 or above on all graduate work).
  • Notify the Graduate School at the beginning of the semester once enrollment is complete if the fellowship is to be applied to tuition.

Most fellowships are awarded beginning the fall semester of the academic year. The application/nomination deadline is June 15. If funding is available, applications will be considered for the spring and summer semesters.

The Lever fellowship is awarded based on the degree program of the student. Graduation from that degree program, changing degree programs or leaving the university will cause the fellowship to be terminated.

The Lever Tuition Fellowship is named in honor of the first African American to receive a graduate degree from the University. Benjamin Franklin Lever, a native of Pine Bluff, received a bachelor’s degree from Tuskegee Institute in 1938. He entered graduate school at the University of Arkansas in 1950 and obtained a Master of Science degree in Agronomy in 1951. In 1955, Mr. Lever obtained a Master of Education degree in Educational Administration from the University, where in 1964 he also received a Diploma of Advanced Studies.

Mr. Lever served on the staff and faculty at Arkansas A.M. & N. (now the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff), was principal at several Arkansas public schools, and was a dean at Shorter College. He died in 1980.
