Welcome to the

Pat Walker Health Center

A Message from the DirectorMary Alice Serafini, PWHC Director and Assistant Vice-Chancellor for Student Affairs

The University of Arkansas community is most fortunate to house the Pat Walker Health Center, an outstanding multi-service collegiate health care facility, on its campus. Fully accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care, we provide proactive medical and mental health care and adhere to the highest standards of care.

What makes the Pat Walker Health Center unique? We are a center focused on the promotion of good health. Thus, we serve the campus community with wellness and prevention activities delivered in a variety of educational settings including everything from individual consultations to one-hour credit classes. Check out this home page for the breadth of health and lifestyle topics that we address to help students who are seeking success in the academic, social, spiritual, and physical worlds.

Our medical care is unique in that we offer family practice medicine on campus with physicians, nurse practitioners, and nurses with expertise in the college health student needs. Not only can our students, faculty, and staff utilize real (meaning board-certified and licensed) physicians, but they can also access the services of a pharmacy, clinical laboratory, and x-ray unit in the same facility. No, this is not a dream, this is a very effective and efficient set up designed to help students in particular get on with their education and take care of their medical needs. Check out the homepage for a description of the Women's Clinic , a specialty service that our female students find incredibly helpful and convenient.

Change is not unique to any particular student. Change however can lead a student to question values, to develop debilitating stress and/or anxieties, or to approach relationships in new ways. For this reason, counseling services are provided at the University Health Center and assist students in approaching change in healthy and productive ways. By addressing mental health issues early on, our Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) contribute to the success of many students individually, and the campus collectively. This web site highlights not only the personalized services our CAPS therapists (yes, I mean "real" therapists licensed by the State of Arkansas with definitive degrees in psychology, social work and professional counseling) provide, but the therapy group offerings and class opportunities available to students.

We are honored that you have landed on our web site to learn about our services. As our mission statement says, we care about each individual in the campus community and strive to offer the best and highest quality of service to the betterment of each person's health. Good health and a good education go hand in hand - take advantage of both while you are at the University of Arkansas.

Yours in good health,

Mary Alice Serafini
