Appointments

For eligible students, staff, and faculty, the appointment process begins by dropping in to meet with the CAPS consultant on duty. The Consultant-on-Duty seeks to serve individuals on a first-come, first-served basis (see below). However, emergencies and people with an urgent need for immediate consultation will be seen ahead of individuals whose needs for service are less urgent.   Even when a consultant is not on duty, the senior clinician-on-call is available to help with crises and emergencies.

When you arrive, a secretary will ask you to complete a Request for Consultation. If you have not been to CAPS in the past six months, the secretary may also ask you to complete a Descriptive Information questionnaire and a Consent Form. When other people are already waiting to see the Consultant-on-Duty, the secretary or a member of the clinical staff may ask you a few questions to assess how urgent your need is to consult with someone.

Your office consultation will last approximately 50 minutes. During the visit, the consultant will ask for information about you and the nature of your concerns. We aim to assess the nature and severity of the problem you are facing, explore what you have tried on your own to cope with the problem, and then try to identify additional resources and/or strategies which might help you to resolve the problem. If group, couple, or individual counseling is indicated, the Consultant-on-Duty will discuss counseling options with you.

Consultations will be guarded as confidential within ethical and legal limits. Due to clinical and ethical considerations, we will not schedule appointments or accept requests for service through email.

CAPS Clinical staff includes both male and female professionals from social work, psychology, and professional counseling. Psychiatric consultation is available only for individuals who are actively engaged in counseling at CAPS.
