Class Excuse Policy:
The
Pat Walker Health Center will not give class excuses. Director’s Explanation: Dear
Students, Faculty and Staff, The
Pat Walker Health Center shares your goal to engage students in the
academic experience at the University of Arkansas by attending class.
Attendance in class is similar to showing up for a paid job.
Attending class and engaging in the educational process is a high
priority as well as a reflection of the value of the education in the
classroom. The
Pat Walker Health Center is committed to assisting students in achieving
a high level of personal health as well as being a part of a healthy
community. To this end, we provide health education as well as treatment
services. The Pat Walker
Health Center Medical Services are available on weekdays and Saturdays
with a high priority not to schedule a student for health care during a
time which interferes with class attendance.
Historically,
students and faculty have relied on medical excuses as a method to
confirm that students were unable to attend class.
Unfortunately, these excuses are often requested after recovery
from an illness or injury and do not, in fact, reflect any interaction
with a health care provider. In
addition, the Pat Walker Health Center is limited in the amount of
information it is able to provide about a student’s medical condition
by state and federal law. For
these reasons, the Pat Walker Health Center Medical Providers will not
give class excuses. Students
and faculty may find it useful to use the Absence
from Class Form which can be found on the Pat Walker
Health Center website. (To
read this documents you must have Adobe Acrobat Reader software. Free Adobe
Acrobat Reader software is available.) It is hoped
that this will allow the student and faculty member to have appropriate
communications about class absences.
In addition, you may wish to read the Medical
Chief of Staff's Perspective on Excuses for Missed Classes.
We
appreciate and respect the extraordinary educational experience our
students are having at the University of Arkansas and are committed to
sustaining healthy individuals and a healthy community.
