Tips for Better Stress Management

  • Managing your stress involves understanding that stress is an everyday occurrence in life, recognizing your stressors, using stress management techniques, REGULARLY incorporating them into your lifestyle.
  • Strive for a balance in your life.
  • Take a day off during the week when you need a break.
  • When you take a vacation, make sure it is a “change of pace.”
  • Try to become less competitive in your recreational activities, i.e., play for fun not to win.
  • Get regular medical checkups and health screenings.
  • Use time management and planning skills.  Get a planner and use it!
  • Drop activities that are not mandatory.
  • Delegate – trust others to do some jobs.
  • Allow yourself to say “no.”
  • Try to identify your “power time” of the day.  This time is when you have the most energy, feel your best, and are the most alert.  Schedule your most important events (studying for a big test or completing a research paper) during this time.
  • Do the things you don’t enjoy first on your daily to-do list.  Getting them over with means you won’t have them looming over you for the rest of the day.
  • Learn to adapt to situations that are not controllable.
  • Change the way you interpret situations.  Don’t see an event as failure; see it as a chance to learn and grow.
  • Find a relaxation technique that works for you – exercise, yoga, meditation, breathing exercises.
  • Get enough sleep and eat a healthy diet.
  • Be patient with yourself.  Treat yourself as you do other people.
  • Be flexible.
  • Laugh and have fun!
