Book 2 - Puzzle 11 Information Sheet and Solution

Breast Health Awareness

Facts:

  • Every woman is at risk for breast cancer.
  • Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer among women.
  • Young women can and do get breast cancer, even in their early 20s and sometimes younger.
  • This year about 10,000 young women under 40 will be told they have breast cancer.  Of these, about 1,000 will be between 20 and 30 years of age.
  • More than 250,000 women under 40 are living with breast cancer.  Many of these women found out they had cancer while they were in their 20s.
  • You can get breast cancer even if you are young, don’t smoke, have no family history of cancer, and even if you exercise, eat right, and watch your weight.

Early detection is crucial:

  • Learn what is normal for your breasts.
  • Check your breasts after your menstrual cycle every month.  This is called a Breast Self-Exam.  If you are not menstruating then do it on the same day each month.
  • Make sure your health care provider does a thorough exam of your breasts, to feel for changes in your breasts as well in your underarm areas.
  • When you are 40 years old a yearly mammogram screening should be performed.  It is normal if there are abnormal screenings with the health care provider, they may refer you to get a mammogram at an earlier age.

What to look for when performing a BSE:

·         Change in shape or feel of your breast.

·         Feel for lumps of any size.

·         You may notice a swelling in a part of your breast.

·         The skin on your breast may dimple, or look red, scaly or irritated.

·         Your nipple may pull inward, look red or scaly or have a rash.

·         There may be a new pain in one spot that doesn’t go away.

o        WARNING:  If you have any of these signs, contact your health care provider immediately!
