Book 2 - Puzzle 4 Information Sheet and Solution

Building a Healthy Diet

When building a healthy diet, there are many things to consider.  Use this fact sheet to help you get started, and always direct nutrition questions to a nutrition expert.  Call the campus Health Center to speak directly to a dietician or nutritionist.

v     Aim to include a variety of foods from all food groups daily.

v     Choose whole-grain products over products made with only white flour.  Whole grain breads, pastas, and rice offer more nutritional value per serving.

v     Incorporate colorful fruits and vegetables into each meal.  They provide important vitamins and minerals that your body needs to function properly.

v     Try to limit your intake of unhealthy fats such as trans-fats and saturated fats.  Opt instead for low-fat versions of foods you love.

v      Avoid foods that are labeled as “deep-fried”, “creamy” or “twice baked”.  They are loaded with extra unhealthy fat and calories.

v     Choose lean meats when eating out or cooking at home.  Try tuna packed in water, skinless boneless chicken breasts, lean roast beef, “select” or “choice” cuts of beef, and low-fat or fat-free hotdogs, lunch meat, and other prepared meat items.

v     Bring portable healthy snacks with you wherever you go.  Bring string cheese and crackers to class, or take a break from studying to snack on trail mix and a bottle of water.

v     Limit your alcohol consumption.  To stay healthy, men should have no more than 2 drinks per day, and women no more than 1 drink per day.

v     Everything in moderation!  Just because you want to eat healthy doesn’t mean you have to stop eating your favorite foods.  You can enjoy all foods in moderation, especially when balancing them with an overall healthy diet.
