HPV: Human Papillomavirus

Most genital HPV infections don’t cause any symptoms, and go away on their own. But HPV is important mainly because it can cause cervical cancer. Every year in the United States .. About 10,000 women get cervical cancer and 3,700 die from it. It is the leading cause of female cancer deaths around the world.

While there are about 40 types of genital HPV, the HPV vaccine protects against 4 major types of HPV. These include 2 types that cause about 70 % of cervical cancer,  and 2 types that cause 90% of genital warts.

Protection from the vaccine is expected to be long lasting. But vaccinated women still need annual pap smears because the vaccine does not protect against all HPV types that cause cervical cancer.

The HPV vaccine is routinely recommended for girls and women between the ages of 11-26 years. It is recommended at the younger age, because it is best to get the vaccine before sexual activity. However, it is still recommended for already sexually active females. The vaccine is not yet currently recommended for males.

The Pat Walker Health Center offers the HPV vaccine. It is given as a 3-dose series:

        1st Dose: Now
        2nd Dose: 2 months after Dose 1
        3rd Dose: 6 months after Dose 1

Visit the  Centers for Disease Control’s website at www.cdc.gov/std. Or call the Pat Walker Health Clinic Womens Clinic at 575-4478 for more information.
