Book 2 - Puzzle 9 Information Sheet and Solution Self-Care
Measures Some basic
activities and knowledge can help you take better care of yourself. ·
Effective
time management will reduce stress. ·
Get
a flu shot every year. ·
The
most common cause of a sore throat is post-nasal drip. In the absence of a
fever, over the counter decongestants and saline gargles help the most
with sore throats. ·
Most
allergy symptoms can be treated with over the counter antihistamines. ·
Apply
ice, not heat, to sprains and strains during the first 72 hours. Remember
RICE, which means rest, ice, compression, and elevate to help minor
sprains. ·
Drink
clear liquids if you have nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. ·
If
you have a fever and abdominal pain, seek medical attention. ·
Avoid
hot baths or showers if you have a rash. Hydrocortisone cream is helpful
for itchy rashes. A painful rash or a rash on the face should be medically
evaluated. ·
A
cold is caused by a virus and last 7 to 10 days. Antibiotics will not help
colds. Rest and drink plenty of fluids. Seek medical care if a cold lasts
for more than 10 days. ·
The
most common medical complaint among college students is fatigue. Get extra
rest to help strengthen your immune system. ·
Avoid
excessive alcohol use, if you choose to drink at all. Never drink and
drive or get in a car with someone who has been drinking and is now
driving. ·
Avoid
smoke or other tobacco products. If you are using tobacco in any form,
quit. ·
If
you are sexually active, use latex condoms to help reduce the risk of
sexually transmitted infections. · Severe pain or a severe headache should be medically evaluated immediately.
