Masks and Respirators

During a pandemic, it is likely that individuals will be encouraged to wear masks and respirators. If used correctly, facemasks and respirators may help prevent exposure to influenza viruses and reduce the risk of becoming infected. Use of facemasks and respirators should be used along with other preventative health habits, such as frequent hand washing and covering coughs and sneezes.

In May 2007, the Food and Drug Administration approved a couple of models of the 3M Particulate Respirator "for use by the general public in public health medical emergencies." Since then, several other brands have also been recommended by the FDA.

It is recommended that each household have 20 respirators and 100 face masks on hand as part of pandemic preparedness practices. To be effective, respirators must meet the standards of OSHA and be NIOSH certified as N95 respirators. For the convenience of members of the University community, respirators and face masks are available for purchase at the University Bookstore. In addition, it is suggested that each household have a box of nitrile (or latex) gloves available for use during medical emergencies. These too can be purchased at the Bookstore.
