In April 2002, RESPECT of the STAR Central Office, University Health Services decided to bring back the Take Back the Night March to the Northwest Arkansas Community. It had been years since such an event had been held. RESPECT vowed to make it an annual tradition for the community to have an avenue to speak out against violence against women. Many community agencies become involved with this event and help promote it and provide information and speak out at the march. Past activities of the March included: a proclamation from the city of Fayetteville, a speak-out, a candlelight vigil, a reading of Marge Piercy’s Rape Poem, inspirational singing, advocacy speakers, and more. Men, women, and children march together as a unified voice denouncing violence against women. The event has caught the eye of many throughout Northwest Arkansas and continues to grow every year.

Gathering for the March will take place between 6:30-7:00pm at the Arvest Plaza on the Fayetteville Square. The March will begin at 7:00pm as participants march to the U of A campus for closing ceremonies. Participants are encouraged to make and carry banners/signs displaying messages that advocate for change and the need for an end to violence against women.

In conjunction with the Take Back the Night March, RESPECT began the Annual Dress Down to Raise Awareness Day in 2006. On the day of the march, employees of participating organizations wear jeans and an official Take Back the Night t-shirt to work during the day as they raise awareness about issues concerning violence, particularly violence against women.

This year, RESPECT will proudly collaborate again with other events during this weekend. Those in attendance at the March are welcome to join activities of Friday Night Live at the University of Arkansas immediately following the March. In addition, participants are welcomed to join the activities of Springfest,
