ARE YOU TRAVELING TO CANADA OR MEXICO?
TWO FACTORS TO CONSIDER for NON-IMMIGRANTS F, J or H
1. Do you need a visa to enter that country?
If YES, or if you aren't sure, you need to contact:
MEXICO: Click here for current information on what Mexico requires.
CANADA: Click here for current information on what Canada requires.
2. Do you need a new visa to re-enter the
US?
As an F-1 and J-1 student or a dependent, you DO NOT need a new
visa to re-enter the US, if you:
re-enter the US within 30 days of entry into Canada, Mexico, or
the contiguous islands and
are in valid status and plan to return to resume that same status
and
present a valid original I-94, I-20/IAP-66 recently endorsed on
the back by a foreign student adviser at IPO, expired or unexpired
visa, and passport and
if originally entered the US in another status, have since had their
status legally changed by INS to F or J status and have the new
I-94 indicating this.
If you need a new visa:
Appointments are now required by all US consular offices in Canada
and at all border posts in Mexico. For more detailed information,
follow the instructions on the Department of State's web site.
Application will be similar to when you first applied for an F/J
visa. You will need to take an I-20/IAP recently endorsed for a
new visa, proof of finances, evidence of intent to return home,
U of A transcripts, explanation of why you are applying for a new
visa there rather than in your home country, funds to pay the visa
application fee, your passport, and any other relevant information.
Please see a foreign student advisers for details.
If NOT SURE: Please speak with a foreign student adviser.
