INFORMATION CONCERNING F-1 AND J-1 RE-ENTRY INTO THE US

If you plan to travel outside the US for a brief period of time and re-enter to continue your studies you will need to follow the following procedures:

F-1 Students and Your Dependents:

Bring your I-20 at least five working days before your planned departure to IPO and fill in an I-20/IAP-66 re-entry request form. Your newly endorsed I-20 will be available to be picked on the fifth working day, after 10:00 AM. Please note that if you have a change in funding source, a new major, or if there have been other changes on your I-20, you will need to request a new I-20 and will need to provide proof of your financial support. You will also need a new I-20 if there are no more lines available for the re-entry endorsement on page 4 of your I-20.

If your visa is expired, you will need to apply for a new visa at a US embassy overseas. The embassy will require similar documents to those presented for your first F-1/J-1 visa: i.e.: The I-20, proof of finances, intent to return home, transcripts indicating you maintained full-time student status.

J-1 Students and Your Dependents:

If Michael Freeman is your responsible officer (RSO), you would follow the above steps. If you aren't sure who your responsible officer is check with us. If your RSO is someone else with another institution/organization, you will need to contact the well in advance regarding your travel plans.

SPECIAL NOTE:

F-1 and J-1 students who are in legal status and are traveling to Mexico, Canada, or the contiguous islands for less than thirty days do not need valid F-1/J-1 visas to re-enter the US. Re-entry is possible with a freshly endorsed I-20/IAP-66, your ORIGINAL I-94 card, and passport. Please check with IPO if you have questions regarding this.
