“My internship in Scotland helped me to form friendships and network with people from across the globe," says poultry science student Kristen Byrne.
For six weeks, Byrne worked under the direction of Dr. Lutz Bunger, leader of the Growth Genetics, Animal Breeding and Development Team at the Scottish Agricultural College. She assisted two technicians and a shepherd with the care and management of Dr. Bunger’s research flocks. Although she didn’t participate in any specific genetics research, the experience helped her to become independent.
Bryne said being on her own in a foreign country and trying to learn all the basic things that are different from how Americans do things was the most exciting aspect of the experience.
“I believe students need to step outside of their comfort zone, in order to grow and become independent and nothing does that quite so well as an international internship,” Bryne said.
A graduate of Dierks High School in southwest Arkansas, Byrne received one of the Cordia Harrington “The Bun Lady” International Experience Endowed Scholarships to help finance her travel expenses.
