“The most exciting aspect of my study abroad experience was a mix between getting to work outside with sheep in the Scottish hills and traveling on the weekends,” according to Keely Trusell, a UA student from Fort Smith.
Trusell, a senior in the UA department of animal science and a pre-vet major, had the opportunity to work a variety of research project with the faculty and Ph.D. students at the Scottish Agricultural College Animal Health Group in Edinburgh, Scotland. The animal health research included parasite studies with sheep and rats and a bacterial infection study with pigs.
“I plan to pursue a degree in veterinary medicine and this experience gave me the opportunity to work in a professional research environment as a member of the team”, Trusell said. “It was research that makes a difference.”
During the weekends, Trusell joined other UA students on internships in Edinburgh to enjoy the Scottish countryside and to visit Ireland and England. She said met so many wonderful internationals students and made lasting friendships. Before this summer, Trusell had never traveled abroad.
“This study abroad experience has been my chance to get out of my comfort zone,” Trusell said. “I'd never been that far from home for six weeks, and this internship gave me the chance to see beautiful places and meet people from different cultures.”
Trusell received the Cordia Harrington “The Bun Lady" International Experience Endowed Scholarship through the Bumpers College Global Studies Program.
