Study abroad opportunities for graduate students

Sept. 18, 2008

Graduate students in agriculture, engineering and related sciences who are interested in biorenewables and alternative energy sources have the opportunity to study for one semester at a European university.

The University of Arkansas is the US lead institution of a EU-US Consortium, with partners at Iowa State University and Kansas State University. The European partners are University of Gent, Belgium; Karl Franzens University, Graz, Austria and Toulouse Polytechnic University, Toulouse, France. An important objective of the consortium is to facilitate transatlantic student research and education.

Students have the opportunity to apply for one of two programs. The current Renewable Resources and Clean Technology project (2004-09) is a transatlantic, interdisciplinary one-semester exchange opportunity for seniors and graduate students focusing on bio-renewables, material science and green technology. The program is funded through the US Department of Education, Further Improvement in Post Secondary Education (FIPSE) program.

Dr. Andy Proctor, UA professor of food science, and leader of the program says nine UA students have already participated in the program. For more information, review the website at: http://foodscience.uark.edu/biorenewable/biorenewable%20resources.html

The second US-EU exchange program is the Integral Valorization of Bio-Production (2008-12), recently funded by FIPSE, US Department of Education. This builds on the success of 'Renewable Resources and Clean Technology' and broadens the field to food science, in addition to non-food agricultural materials and applications.

Interested students should contact Dr. Andy Proctor in the department of food science. Phone 575 2980.
