Tom Paradise comes from a diverse background in geology, physical and cultural geography, cartography/GIS, natural and technological hazards, and architectural history. His unique combination of knowledge and training has guided his work and teaching in resource management, hazards, architectural deterioration, geomorphology, cartography and spatial visualization. His expertise has been requested by agencies in Italy, England, Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, Lebanon, and Jordan, in addition to UNESCO, USIA/USIS, and USAID.

Having studied and taught about the unique architecture of Petra, Jordan since the 1980s, Dr. Paradise has published more than forty articles, book chapters, and books. In the 1990s, he was awarded a three-year Senior Scholar Fulbright grant to continue his research in Petra, in addition to receiving two outstanding teaching awards at the Universities of Hawaii and Arizona State. He works in the fields of architectural deterioration and weathering, cultural and natural resource management, and computer cartography.  In addition, he has authored more than three atlases and is currently working on an Atlas of the Middle East and North Africa that will be available in English and Arabic.

Dr. Paradise is the current Associate Director of the King Fahd Center.
