Biography

I started out in music (jazz trombone), received a Bachelor of Music degree in 1955 from the University of North Texas in Denton, and served in the U.S. Army (Army bands & 7th Army Symphony, in Europe) during 1955-57.

After not making it as a musician in New York City in 1957, I switched to physics in 1958, received a Bachelor of Science degree Magna Cum Laude in 1960 and a PhD in 1964, both from Kansas State University in Manhattan. Dissertation topic: "Methods of statistical mechanics applied to problems in electrodynamics."

I came to the University of Arkansas in 1964 where I taught and researched for 35 years. During these years, I was a research associate at the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute during a 1985 sabbatical, served as editor of the quarterlyPhysics and Society during1986-96, was elected a Fellow of the American Physical Society in 1992 "for outstanding development of the Newsletter of the Forum on Physics and Society, and for numerous other contributions in the area of physics and society," and retired in May 1999. Today I am an active Emeritus Professor. I was born on 27 November 1934, have two children (Ziva 1964, David 1967) by my first marriage, and am delighted to have married Marie Riley in 1997.
