High School Physics Day

The University of Arkansas Department of Physics will host its annual High School Physics Day on FRIDAY March 7, 2008. By request, new competition events have replaced some others and the day’s schedule has also been altered. Noteworthy are the mystery competition, in which students will receive the task upon arrival at the event, Quiz Bowl, and Mousetrap Car Races. In order to enhance the high school physics day experience, all schools are asked to enter one team in the following events; Mystery Event, Egg Drop, Quiz Bowl, and Mouse Trap. We want to point out the bonus competition, Dramatic Interpretation. This is a new addition that allows schools to earn bonus points toward the overall school competition. Please note the rules changes and visit the rules web page.

Note that a small registration fee is required ($2.50 per student, teachers and chaperones are free) which includes a pizza lunch, making the fee quite reasonable. There will be prizes in every category, and classroom prizes for the best overall school. We hope that this day will encourage the pursuit of physics as a career itself or as a valuable asset to a large number of possible careers by providing an opportunity for detailed projects to be carried out in a lighthearted (and hopefully light-landing) manner. We also hope to give students and teachers from across the state an opportunity to get acquainted, better inform them about our undergraduate physics programs, and show that fysics is phun!

Following is the schedule for High School Physics Day. The rules for each event are listed on the rules web page. Registrations are accepted though snail-mail or electronically. Please note that the registration deadline is Friday, February 29, 2008. Due to the nature of the competitions, we ask that all schools pre-register; on-site registrations will not be accepted. A small registration fee is required ($2.50 per student, teachers and chaperones are free) which includes a pizza lunch. Registration fees may be paid through mail or at the time of registration. Registration forms are at the bottom of this page.
