Soil Test Analyses

Analysis of soil pH, extractable nutrients, and EC are part of the routine soil test package. All routine soil test analyses are provided at "no direct cost" to Arkansas farmers because of the funding derived from the Arkansas Fertilizer Tonnage Inspection Fee. All soil samples must be submitted through your local Cooperative Extension Service county office. The CES staff will assist you with the sample information form, will send the sample to the lab, and will review the fertilizer and lime recommendations.

 
 

Routine Soil Analysis includes:

Soluble Soil Nitrate-Nitrogen - Request only

Nitrate is one component of the soil nitrogen suite. This selective-ion electrode test is used as an estimate of readily available nitrate nitrogen to the plant. The results are mainly used to adjust crop N recommendations. The interpretation of the information is best for samples collected down to a depth of at least 18 inches just prior to planting.

Soil Organic Matter

Determination of the organic matter content of the soil is performed by the loss on ignition method. Because this analysis is labor intensive and slow, it is not part of the routine package.

Plant Tissue Analyses

Cotton Petiole Analysis

This procedure determines the amount of soluble P, K, S, and NO3-N in the petiole (leaf stem). As mentioned above, the method interpretation is calibrated for the fourth leaf from the top. This program provides a package of 10 weekly petiole analyses starting at first square with nutrient recommendations for N, P, K, S, and B.
