Within a few days after an aphid has died as a result of the fungal infection, its body is overgrown by a variety of saprophytic fungi, often visible as fuzzy gray masses on the lower surfaces of the cotton leaves. This complex of opportunistic fungi is not Neozygites fresenii, but these saprophyte-covered aphids are a sign that an epizootic is in progress and aphid populations are declining. |
