Dear Sturgis Applicant:

Applying for the Sturgis Fellowship is a process that allows us to get to know each other. It is not about faceless names attached to grades and scores. We want to get to know you, and we want to share with you the rich history of the Sturgis Fellowship Program and the Fulbright Honors Studies Program. By richness, I am not simply referring to the generous $10 million dollar Sturgis endowment, but to the opportunities this gift has afforded our students, and how these students have transformed opportunity into achievement.

The Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences Honors Studies Program offers classes taught by respected and accomplished scholars including National Science Foundation grant recipients, National Endowment for the Humanities Scholars, and Guggenheim Fellows. Dr. Peter Ungar and our Center for Advanced Spatial Technologies are part of a multinational team undertaking critical archeological excavations of South African sites believed to contain significant information about the earliest known humans. This work, to be chronicled in National Geographic, obviously could change our understanding of human history. Professor Ungar, and others like him, regularly teach freshman classes.

You will also be challenged by the very talented students in your classes. Over 1,100 students actively participate in the Honors Studies Program. These students are competitive at the national level. In 2001-2002, we had two Barry Goldwater scholars, a James Madison Scholar, a Fulbright Scholar, a Marshall Scholar, an NSF Graduate Fellowship winner, and 13 winners of NSF Research Experience for Undergraduates grants.

In addition, five of our students were finalists for the Rhodes, another won a Truman Scholarship, and one student was named to the USA TODAY All-College Academic Team.

I have shared a little about us. Now it is your turn to tell us something about you. Please call if you have any questions about the application or about any of our programs. We are here for you.

Sincerely,

William A. Schwab
Dean
