What is the name of this degree?

The degree is a Bachelor of Science in Education (B.S.E.) with a major in Human Resource Development (HRDV).  The degree is offered by the Department of Rehabilitation, Human Resources and Communication Disorders, College of Education and Health Professions, University of Arkansas.  The BSE is a marketable U of A degree and qualifies you for the same privileges as any other graduate of the University of Arkansas.  HRDV courses are delivered by the University of Arkansas Global Campus

How much do HRDV classes cost?

Tuition for the 2008 school year is $192 per credit hour (expect tuition to increase annually).  Board of Trustees policy does not charge out-of-state tuition for online programs (any policy may change unexpectedly).

What financial aid and scholarships are available?

Several types of financial aid and scholarships are available to students in the HRDV major.  The U of A Financial Aid Office administers financial aid concerning all the classes HRDV students take, including the classes taken from certain other schools by way of consortium agreements.  The first step is to complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online.  The code number for the U of A is #001108.

In addition to financial aid, there are U of A scholarships and College of Education and Health Professions scholarships available to HRDV students.  The Fund My Future Web site offers a comprehensive listing of Arkansas scholarship and financial aid information.

What is a Financial Aid Consortium Agreement?

HRDV students taking at least six hours from the U of A who also need to take courses from certain distant schools to complete their degree requirements can request a Financial Aid Consortium Agreement (Adobe Acrobat required).  A consortium agreement allows the course load from other schools to be added to the U of A course load for financial aid eligibility purposes.  Contact Glennia Hunt to ask for details and guidelines (1-800-377-8632 or 479-575-3078).

Do U of A System Employees get a tuition discount?

No, only employees at the Fayetteville campus can apply the discount to tuition only.  The U of A Board of Trustees Policy 440.1, 475.1; Universitywide Administrative Memorandum 445.1; and Fayetteville Policies and
Procedures 512.0, as amended 8/16/2006, exclude Web-based classes taken from other campuses.  The price quoted above includes the distance education/administrative fee which is not discounted.

Does this degree lead to traditional licensure for teachers in Arkansas?

No.  Even though it is a Bachelor of Science in Education, the HRDV major does not lead to traditional licensure for teachers in Arkansas.  This major does create a learning environment in which students can gain the skills to become a professional leader in improving the performance of people at the individual, small group, and organizational levels.  Nevertheless, some of our graduates have successfully used this degree to achieve licensure through nontraditional means.  More information on teacher licensure requirements can come from either the College of Education 479-575-6740 or the Arkansas Department of Education 501-682-4342.

Where can I take HRDV classes?

Since fall 2008, all HRDV classes are delivered over the Internet.  Online class assignments are accessed and completed at the student's convenience ahead of due dates posted across the normal 15-week semester schedule.

Can I start HRDV Professional (cohort) classes at any time?

No, the first two classes offered in the HRDV Professional (cohort) rotation are pre- or corequisites for all that follow.  Experience has shown that students who miss the foundational learning concepts in the first fall semester are disadvantaged throughout the remaining courses. However, students who have exceptionally completed (or are in progress with) all General Education requirements might gain departmental approval to begin in the spring semester by taking two non-cohort courses.

What is a cohort?

Merriam-Webster's Unabridged Third New International Dictionary defines the noun cohort as “a group of warriors or soldiers” as well as “a company, band, or group.” Another definition includes the concept of companionship. Although cohort often has a negative connotation outside of education, we think this word is perfect.  We hope our working adult HRDV students bond together to help each other overcome all the challenges life throws at them between now and graduation.

How do I join an HRDV cohort?

Departmental approval, full admission to the U of A, and completion of an on-line Off-Campus orientation are all required for HRDV cohort membership.  You are advised to seek departmental approval as early as possible before applying for admission.  Here are the steps to getting into an HRDV cohort:

  1. Download a Request for Departmental Approval (Adobe Acrobat Reader required).  The alternative Portable Network Graphics (PNG) version is printable through your Web browser.  We can also be reached by phone at (479) 575-4709, by fax at (479) 575-3767, or by e-mail at hrd@uark.edu

  2. Send in the form and attachments to get a no-cost, no-obligation review of your qualifications.  Requests are accepted year-round, but those received after July 15th might not allow enough processing time before the fall semester.  With the form, include...

    a) Cover Letter explaining your purpose or desired career goal(s) you hope to achieve with this degree. Explain your qualifications to enter

b) Résumé listing your full-time work history, schools attended, and names of any professional certifications earned (copies of the certificates themselves are not needed)

c) Readable Transcript showing the college courses, credit hours, and grades should be attached.

How do I register for HRDV classes?

New HRDV students are enrolled administratively in their initial two cohort classes upon completing the online New HRDV Student Off-Campus Orientation.  Beyond these first two classes, registering and paying for HRDV classes happens online using ISIS.  Find many excellent downloadable instructions and videos on the ISIS training page.

How do I know which HRDV class to register for?

HRDV students' academic advisor prepares an individual worksheet for them before each fall and spring semester priority registration that lists their options and requirements for the upcoming semester.  In addition to that individual report, the HRDV 5-Semester Degree-Completion Plan lists the general goals which HRDV students should reach that semester.

How many hours can I transfer into the University of Arkansas?

You can transfer a maximum of 68 lower-division (freshman or sophomore) hours to the U of A.  That's enough to cover all of your Core General Education requirements and almost half of your HRDV Technical requirements.  Appropriate upper-division (junior or senior) courses from a 4-year institution of higher learning are unlimited until you reach senior rank.  For more information, read the transfer policies section of the U of A Transfer Policies page.

How can I tell if my courses will transfer to the University of Arkansas?

The Arkansas Course Transfer System (ACTS) is the official Web site for transferability of current and future courses between colleges in Arkansas.  The U of A, Fayetteville, Registrar's Office maintains the Transfer Credit Connection listing how courses previously transferred from colleges.  Follow screen directions to see if the other 2 or 4-year college is listed.  If so, you should be able to research the historical U of A equivalent courses, if any, to the ones you took at another school.

How much credit for job knowledge can I earn towards the degree?

HRDV students can earn credit toward their Technical requirements for their occupational knowledge two ways:

  • National Occupational Testing Institute's (NOCTI's) written assessments that
    • measure knowledge related to an occupation (or goal) in which the student has work experience or training
    • do not duplicate credit already counting towards degree requirements
    • credit earned depends on the assessment scores
    • NOCTIs can be taken at various college testing centers
    • credit from NOCTI assessments is tuition-free
    • See the NOCTI web site for descriptions of available "Student-Level" (Job-Ready) assessments
  • HRDV 450V Experiential Learning (credit for certification)
    • is earned by documenting the knowledge acquired from professional certifications, prior training, or work experience
    • Experiential Learning cannot duplicate credit already counting toward degree requirements
    • the prerequisite HRDV 3503 Workforce Behavior must be completed
    • tuition is charged for credit awarded through Experiential Learning

What are NOCTI assessments?

National Occupational Competency Institute (NOCTI) standardized assessments are widely used extensively in the Workforce Development context to measure job knowledge in various technical fields at the secondary and post-secondary levels.

How do I get additional NOCTI assessments approved for my individual program of study?

Getting additional National Occupational Competency Testing Institute (NOCTI) Job-Ready (student-level) assessments approved for your individual program of study is as easy as e-mailing to your academic advisor the full-sentence answers to these five questions:

  1. What is the Number and Title of the NOCTI assessment you want approved?
  2. How do the job knowledge elements in this assessment relate to your
past, present, or future occupation, field, or position?
  3. How do the job knowledge elements in this assessment strengthen your
credibility in a leadership role (and/or) contribute to your technical
    expertise?
  4. What knowledge areas in this assessment are similar to the credit
already being used in your program of study?
  5. How did you gain the knowledge measured by this assessment?

How do HRDV students qualify for a Graduation Application?

HRDV students can expect a graduation application in the mail after they...

  1. understand the difference between graduation and commencement
  2. complete, exempt, or are in progress with the U of A Advanced Writing requirement
  3. have all their NOCTI credit, if any, in their program of study, posted on ISIS
  4. have all transfer credit in their program of study, if any, posted on ISIS.  This happens when schools send official transcripts to the U of A Registrar's Office, 146 Silas Hunt Hall, Fayetteville, AR 72701
  5. have 112 or more credit hours on ISIS or in progress by the end of the current semester
  6. have a term-by-term plan for specific courses to complete all degree requirements
  7. meet the U of A Senior Residency Requirement
  8. added their DIPLOMA mailing address to the myISIS Student Center

Upon reaching all eight of these degree-progress milestones, HRDV students will be mailed a graduation application and an official program of study.
