What courses will satisfy the University Elective requirements?

Just about any course that meets the U of A's transfer policies will work.  (Note: the actual number of Electives required will vary as needed to ensure the total of General Education credits equals 55.  For example, if exemption from the Advanced Writing requirement is gained, the Elective requirement will increase by three to compensate for the English course that was not taken.  Conversely, if a 4-hour College Algebra course is taken, Elective requirements would decrease by one to maintain a total of 55credits.

Here are the criteria for transfer courses:

  • From a regionally accredited institution of higher education
  • Generally, graded at "C" or better
  • Is NOT technical, vocational, or remedial in nature

What courses will satisfy the various HRDV Major Requirements?

What are the HRDV Technical Requirement choices?
HRDV Technical hours can be earned in many ways.  The following four ways are merely the most common:

a. HRDV 3403 Employment Law is the only required Technical course for all students in catalog years 2004 and later.  Although listed here first, it is generally one of the last classes HRDV students take in the 5-semester degree-completion plan.  HRDV students should be in-progress or complete with all General Education requirements and be in-progress or complete with all transfer coursework for Technical requirements prior to enrolling in this course.

b. Transfer in courses that commonly apply from another institution of higher learning that 1) meet U of A's grade minimums of "C" or better, 2) are related to the student's occupation (or goal), and 3) are appropriate for HRDV.  HRDV advisors can guide students to justify other courses as appropriate.

c. National Occupational Testing Institute (NOCTI) written and performance assessments measure job knowledge for which Technical credit can be awarded.  The HRDV advisor determines which NOCTI assessments are appropriate for degree. The NOCTI assessment should both measures knowledge related to an occupation (or goal) in which the student had work experience or training and not duplicate credit already counting towards degree requirements.  The amount of credit earned depends on the score. Students arrange to take NOCTI assessments through UAF Testing Services or from certain other testing centers.  HRDV Technical credit earned by NOCTI is tuition-free. See the NOCTI web site for descriptions of available "Student-Level" (Job-Ready) assessments.

d. HRDV 450V, Experiential Learning, commonly referred to as credit for certifications, is earned by documenting the knowledge acquired from professional certifications, prior training, or work experience that both does not now carry college credit and does not duplicate credit already counting toward degree requirements.  Tuition is charged for Experiential Learning credit.  Dr. Kit Kacirek directs Experiential Learning process. HRDV 3503 Workforce Behavior is the prerequisite course for Experiential Learning.  Students cannot register themselves for HRDV 450V, but must be administratively added.

It is recommended that students 1) consult with their HRDV academic advisor, 2) read the Certification Guidelines (Adobe Reader Required), and 3) review the steps with Dr. Kacirek before completing a Certification Credit Review Request

These courses (if not already used elsewhere) generally apply to anyone's HRDV Technical Requirements.  Your HRDV advisor will determine what other credits count for Technical based upon what credit the U of A accepts and how it relates to the student's occupation (or occupational goal).
