Extracurricular Activities

Distiguished Lesture Series:

Four times each academic year, MBTC invites transportation and other engineering professionals to share their experiences with students and faculty during a special lecture series. "Pizza with the Pros," a popular event each fall, brings members of the U of A's Academy of Civil Engineering to campus to introduce students to real-world engineering concerns and problems.

Field Trips

Transportation students at the U of A regularly visit transportation engineering projects in the region.  At right, students learn on-site about elements of Dallas' Central Expressway reconstruction project from Makram Baiteneh of the Texas Department of Transportation. The students later observed the Dallas Area Rapid Transit light rail system in operation.   Other recent field trips have included visits to the construction sites of I-540 and Highway 412 in Northwest Arkansas, and a tour of facilities at the new Northwest Arkansas Regional Airport.

Professional Meetings

MBTC sends students to local, regional, and national transportation meetings and conferences to familiarize students with current issues and provide them with opportunities to learn from transportation experts. In January 2001, several U of A students attended the annual meeting of the Transportation Research Board in Washington, DC.

Industrial engineering graduate students employed on MBTC-sponsored projects regularly present their research findings at the annual fall forum of The Logistics Institute. Among the student presenters at the 2000 session were Tat-Yuen Sang and Chet Tuck Wong, shown at right preparing their poster displays.
