MISSION OF AED: "The mission of the Society is to encourage and recognize excellence in premedical scholarship; to stimulate an appreciation of the importance of premedical education; to promote communication between medical and premedical students and educators; to provide a forum for students with common interests; and to use its resources to benefit health organizations, charities and the community." AED MEMBERSHIP REQUIREMENTS

AED application- APPLICATIONS FOR NEW MEMBERS WILL BE AVAILABLE IN DECEMBER, 2007. See forms above.

MEMBERSHIP REQUIREMENTS:AED is a National premedical honor society.
The requirements to qualify membership are listed below.

PLEASE NOTE: AED MEETINGS AND PRESENTATIONS ARE OPEN TO ALL PREMED STUDENTS ON CAMPUS, MEMBERSHIP IS NOT REQUIRED TO ATTEND MEETINGS OR PARTICIPATE IN AED EVENTS.

Students can apply for membership in AED if youhave completed 44-45 credit hours by January of 2008 and have an overall GPA of 3.2 or greater and a Science/Math GPA of 3.2 or greater. Science and math classes include any course with the Alpha code of BIOL, CHEM, MATH, and PHYS.

MCAT PRACTICE TEST: sponsored by Kaplan. Details can be obtained from the Kaplan Test Center 479-521-8599

October 24, 2007 DIFFERENT WAYS TO PREPARE FOR THE MCAT. A panel of students who have recently taken the MCAT will talk about how they prepared for the exam. Some students on the panel took the Kaplan MCAT prep course to prepare for the exam, while some students chose to prepare on their own.

A Kaplan representative will also speak about the format and content of the Kaplan MCAT prep course. All students who are considering taking the MCAT in the future are encouraged to attend.

AED 2004 Initiation Banquet New members for 2006 will be initiated. You must have earned 44-45 hours by January, 2008 and a 3.2 Science/Math GPA to join. All current members of AED are encouraged to attend the banquet. Elections of new executive officers will take place at the banquet.

UAMS CENTER FOR DIVERSITY AFFAIRS
Representatives will visit our campus to talk about two outreach programs offered at the College of Medicine in Little Rock during the summer of 2007. The Undergraduate Summer Science Enrichment Program (USSEP) is a 6-week program for students interested in medical school. This program is an excellent opportunity for students who would like to reinforce their science knowledge and prepare for the MCAT.

Field-trip to University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences College of Medicine, Little Rock

All premedical students are invited to tour the College of Medicine. This will be an all-day trip to Little Rock. We will car-pool. Students will have the opportunity to visit the Institute on Aging, the neonatal care unit, the operating room gallery and many other points of interest. There will also be an opportunity to meet with current medical students who completed their undergraduate work at UA Fayetteville.

Mandatory Medical School Application Workshops
This workshop is offered on 4 different days. It is intended for ALL 2008 applicants to medical school who plan on entering medical school in August of 2009. It is essential that you attend one of these workshops to receive instructions and deadlines to be eligible for an evaluation letter from the University of Arkansas Premedical Advisory Committee.

IN THE SPRING OF 2005 THE UNIVERSITY OF ARKANSAS HONORED DR. EDITH IRBY JONES AS A FULBRIGHT COLLEGE DISTINGUISHED ALUMNA.

Dr. Edith Irby Jones graduated from the University of Arkansas College of Medicine in 1952. She was the first African American graduate from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, she the first female president of the National Medical Association, and she was the first African American female resident at Baylor College of Medicine. Dr. Jones is still a practicing physician and and is currently chief of medical staff at Riverside General Hospital in Houston.

GET INVOLVED

Step 1. Get on the AED email list serv. (Use the direct link above.)
You will receive information from both the premed advisors and AED program information.

Step 2. Visit the University of Arkansas Liebolt Premedical Program web site (Use the direct link above.)
Information about getting into medical school and what you need to do as an undergraduate.

Step 3. Meet with one of the premedical advisors (Dr. Allison or McLachlin) on campus.
We see students from every college and school on campus (AFLS, ARCH, ARSC, EDUC, ENGR, WCOB)

Step 4. Join AED!
After you have completed 45 credit hours with a GPA of 3.2 you are eligible to become a member of AED.
