I am continually amazed by our society and why Americans are
willing to engage in some activities but not in others. There
has been much preoccupation on campus lately regarding "provocative
orator" on the mall between Mullins Library and the Arkansas
Union. I fail to understand why people are so upset.
While
Gary Bowman, or “Moses” has gained a reputation on
campus for distorting biblical ideals. Instead of
listening or complaining, exercise your freedom of
speech or speak louder by ignoring him altogether.

Freedom of speech was one of the primary concepts used when
founding the United States. In this country, individuals can
say what they want to say as long as they do not interfere
with the rights and liberties of others. So what’s this guy
saying that is so terribly upsetting?
Sure he can be offensive. I’m sure this column has also managed
to offend someone. I’m sure some of your beliefs offend others
from time to time. The danger is not in offending one another.
The danger comes when we are no longer offended by other people’s
beliefs – when we all begin to think alike. The danger comes
when we are no longer willing to stand up for our beliefs
no matter how unpopular or disturbing they may be. The danger
is when we are no longer willing to listen to those who disagree
with us. It is when we begin to silence one another that ideas
become truly destructive.
So if you are as distraught by this public display as others
claim to be … tells us about it. Take the other grassy knoll
in front of the Union and give this guy a run for his money.
As John Stewart Mill puts it, contribute to the market place
of ideas. Help the best ideas to come forward and survive.
Show others why your ideas are better than someone else’s.
As long as nothing else is being said, this gentleman’s sophomoric
rantings are the best ideas out there.
Then again, if you’re really not that disturbed by the man,
if you aren’t willing to contribute your ideas to the market
place … don’t worry about it. And don’t complain.
