Amanda's Picks: Top ten movies of 2000
by Amanda Center
8 Feb 2001

Of the many movies released in 2000, I have seen 44. Many people are shocked that I have been able to see so many, but that really isn't such a large number.
Usually, there are about 300 movies released in a year, and I haven't even seen one a week, so it really isn't an impressive amount. So, although I have seen a fair amount of good movies, I feel that my top ten list is lacking because some of my choices are fillers. Had Fayetteville ever gotten movies like Quills, Bamboozled, or The Yards (or countless other films) I am sure my list would be severely altered, but here it is:

10. Erin Brockovitch - This was a good flick, but I used it as filler.

9. Gladiator - This movie was superficially good. It had a captivating story line, strong characters, and good-looking actors, but overall, I didn't leave the theater thinking, "boy that was great."

8. The Gift - I really loved this story. It was one of the most original movies of the year. Cate Blanchett was great in her role as a widowed, psychic mother helping to find a murderer. Also, the script was written by Billy Bob Thorton.

7. The Contender - While the story may have seemed to be the tired woman vs. sexist institution, it turned out to be very invigorating, and it made a lot of interesting observations of gender and political roles. The ending was a bit trite, but overall the movie was very good.

6. American Psycho - This is a great picture studying the effects of money, drugs, and the need to homogenize into the typical high-powered eighties businessman and the consequences on society.

5. Best In Show - This is one of the funniest movies I have seen all year. The plot centers on dog shows and dog owners filmed as a documentary. Fred Willard, as one of the dog show commentators, is hilarious. If you're not interested in dogs, at least watch it to see the man with the two left feet.

4. High Fidelity - John Cusack wrote this movie studying love and relationships. What sets this apart from all the other movies like this is it takes an honest approach as to what it takes for a man to make his relationship work. Plus it is very funny, and the supporting cast steals the scene from Cusack continuously.

3. Almost Famous - This movie is beautiful. I usually hate movies hailed as "coming-of-age films," but this movie operates as a family story, a romance, a musical and a drama. Everything about this movie is great.

2. The Virgin Suicides - Sofia Coppola's directorial debut about five girls who kill themselves and the effects of the neighborhood boys that love them is haunting, sad and very well made. It stayed with me for a long time after I saw it, which is the mark of a good movie.

1. Traffic - This movie has one many industry awards and for good reason. It is a powerful look at the drug industry through three completely separate lives. The writing, directing, acting are perfect.
