For me, African American Studies is about empowerment. How can a person or a community move in positive directions without having a strong sense of its past and the contemporary issues affecting its present? African American Studies affords students the opportunity to find greater meaning to their lives. Students come to understand that so much of how they conceptualize their existences is shaped by the influences that African American culture has upon them.
