A limited number of places will be available for University of Arkansas students. The fundamentals of plant biology and chemistry will be reviewed followed by a discussion of bio-mass and the life cycle analysis and environmental impact of the bio-economy. Bio-fuels, thermo-chemisty and production of industrial chemicals from biomass will also be discussed. Lectures will be given primarily by Iowa State faculty. Tuition and housing costs are covered by Iowa State University.

June 3Attendees arrive – welcoming and situating are main tasks. Welcoming dinner will be held in MU. 1. Thursday
June 4Course overview and expectations. Orientation to ISU. Introductions. Lecture: Overview of Biorenewables -– demands, supplies, and challenges of a growing bioeconomy. Biosphere mass-energy flows. 0.5 day lecture.
2. Friday
June 5Depart on Tour @ 8 AM – visit Cargill Minneapolis in afternoon, stay in downtown Minneapolis. 3. Saturday
June 6Breakfast/lunch on own, depart 11 AM for Mall of America. Depart Mall of America 3 PM and proceed to Ames. Free evening. 4. Sunday
June 7Farm visit and old fashioned barbeque 5. Monday
June 8Review of fundamentals – chemistry, plant biology – 1.0 day lecture 6. Tuesday
June 9Life-cycle analyses and environmental impacts of the bioeconomy – Economics; Agro-eco zones, 0.75 day lecture, Tour Reiman Gardens; Quiz 1

Sustainable Utilization of Renewable Resources • June 28–July 10, 2009 •
Karl Franzens University, Graz, Austria
A few places for University of Arkansas students will be available to attend this multidisciplinary course with other students from across Europe and the United States. Lectures will be given by a large number of EU and U.S. professors experienced in various disciplines relating to biomass and biomaterials. Tuition and housing cost are covered by the EU.

University of Arkansas may send up to three students to the two-week intensive course.
Students should turn in applications to Dr. Andrew Proctor before May 1.

Once students are in Europe, the cost for housing, food, courses, lab exercises and course-related excursions will be covered by the Karl Franzens University, Graz.
