June 3–16, 2009 Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa

A limited number of places will be available for University of Arkansas students. The fundamentals of plant biology and chemistry will be reviewed followed by a discussion of bio-mass and the life cycle analysis and environmental impact of the bio-economy. Bio-fuels, thermo-chemisty and production of industrial chemicals from biomass will also be discussed. Lectures will be given primarily by Iowa State faculty. Tuition and housing costs are covered by Iowa State University.

Attendees arrive – welcoming and situating are main tasks. Welcoming dinner will be held in MU.
1. Thursday
June 4

Course overview and expectations. Orientation to ISU. Introductions. Lecture: Overview of Biorenewables -– demands, supplies, and challenges of a growing bioeconomy. Biosphere mass-energy flows. 0.5 day lecture.

2. Friday
June 5
Depart on Tour @ 8 AM – visit Cargill Minneapolis in afternoon, stay in downtown Minneapolis.
3. Saturday
June 6
Breakfast/lunch on own, depart 11 AM for Mall of America. Depart Mall of America 3 PM and proceed to Ames. Free evening.

Farm visit and old fashioned barbeque

Review of fundamentals – chemistry, plant biology – 1.0 day lecture

Life-cycle analyses and environmental impacts of the bioeconomy – Economics; Agro-eco zones, 0.75 day lecture, Tour Reiman Gardens; Quiz 1

Harvest/Transportation/Storage, 0.75 day lecture total, Tour New Century Farm – late afternoon

Afternoon tour to either BECON, Lincolnway, West Central Coop.

Ames attractions / rest day: Three recreational options

Sustainable Utilization of Renewable Resources June 28–July 10, 2009
Karl Franzens University, Graz, Austria

A few places for University of Arkansas students will be available to attend this multidisciplinary course with other students from across Europe and the United States. Lectures will be given by a large number of EU and U.S. professors experienced in various disciplines relating to biomass and biomaterials. Tuition and housing cost are covered by the EU.

How to Apply

University of Arkansas may send up to three students to the two-week intensive course.

Students should turn in applications to

Program Costs

Once students are in Europe, the cost for housing, food, courses, lab exercises and course-related excursions will be covered by the Karl Franzens University, Graz.

Costs not covered by the institution are the responsibility of the student.

Travel Information

Travel arrangements will be made once students have applied and are accepted to the two-week program.
