James Shuls is originally from Pacific, MO. He moved to Joplin in 2000 to study elementary education at Missouri Southern State University. While at MOSO James met his wife, they moved to her hometown of Nixa, MO in 2004. While living in Nixa, James taught first and fifth grade in the Republic R-III School District, earned his masters degree in elementary education from Missouri State University, and had two children.
 
James is currently a Doctoral Academy Fellow and a PhD student in Education Policy. He is also a graduate assistant for the Office for Education Policy. His research interests include: school choice, performance pay for teachers, and government education policy.
