Fifth Annual KUAF Summer Jazz Concert Series

and supported by the University of Arkansas Artists and Concerts Committee

The 2003 KUAF Summer Jazz Concert Series is in its Fifth season!   The series features some of Northwest Arkansas' fine jazz musicians playing with some excellent guest musicians from around the country.  This year's line up is no exception featuring exciting vocalists, a nationally reknowned bass virtuoso with Arkansas ties, and of course our own Claudia Burson.

Concert 1 - June 27 - featuring pianist Claudia Burson and singer Julie Lonon

The opening concert of the fifth Summer Jazz Season will feature pianist Claudia Burson; Jim Greeson, bass;  Steve Wilkes, drums;  Al Gibson, trumpet; Larry Cangelosi, tenor sax; Gerry Sloan, trombone; and vocalist Julie Lonon.  They will be playing music by George Gershwin, Hoagy Carmichael, Horace Silver and others in new arrangements.

Concert 2 - July 18 - featuring jazz vocalist Miles Griffith

New York based jazz vocalist Miles Griffith played the lead role of "Jesse" in Wynton Marsalis', celebrated "Blood On The Fields," the jazz oratorio which premiered at Lincoln Centers' Alice Tully Hall.  Griffith also participated on the recording which was released on Sony Music to end Marsalis' Pulitzer Award winning world tour.  Appearing with Griffith is New York pianist and composer Michael Jefry Stevens.

Concert 3 - August 1 - Composers' and Local Bands Showcase
This concert has become an annual favorite.  Our fine local jazz musicians present their own jazz compositions and it always has results in a high energy concert.  This season it will also feature Jack Martin's "Jazz Mafia" and the "Ryan Fourt Trio" as well as many other area players.

Concert 4 - August 8 - Bassist Lynn Seaton

Lynn Seaton teaches jazz bass at the famous University of North Texas and is on the Jamey Aeberold Summer Jazz Workshop faculty.   In 1984, he joined Woody Herman and in 1985 he played with the Count Basie Orchestra. After a two year engagement with the Basie Band, he did  extended tours with Tony Bennett and George Shearing. Since 1993, Lynn has had a busy career free-lancing with many musicians.  He has performed at festivals world wide including Bern, Concord, JVC, Kool, Kyoto, Newport, North Sea, Perugia and Pori.

Concert 5 - August 22 - Vocalist Lisa Henry

Kansas City based jazz singer Lisa Henry will return to our Summer Jazz Concert Series as the season closer.  In her first appearance two years ago she "blew the lid off the place" with her big voice, energy, charm and soulful approach to jazz standards.  She will be backed up by our house rhythm section featuring Claudia Burson on piano, Jim Greeson on bass, and Kenny Everts on drums.

at 8 pm in Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall (near the parking deck)
